Surah 2 · Verse 246

اَلَمْalamDid notتَرَtarayou seeاِلَىilā[towards]الْمَلَأِl-mala-ithe chiefsمِنْminofبَن۪ٓيbanī(the) Childrenاِسْرَٓائ۪لَis'rāīla(of) IsraelمِنْminfromبَعْدِbaʿdiafterمُوسٰىۢmūsāMusaاِذْidhwhenقَالُواqālūthey saidلِنَبِيٍّlinabiyyinto a Prophetلَهُمُlahumuof theirsابْعَثْib'ʿathAppointلَنَاlanāfor usمَلِكاًmalikana kingنُقَاتِلْnuqātilwe may fightف۪يfīinسَب۪يلِsabīli(the) wayاللّٰهِۜl-lahi(of) AllahقَالَqālaHe saidهَلْhalWouldعَسَيْتُمْʿasaytumyou perhapsاِنْinifكُتِبَkutibaprescribedعَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumuupon youالْقِتَالُl-qitālu[the] fightingاَلَّاallāthat notتُقَاتِلُواۜtuqātilūyou fightقَالُواqālūThey saidوَمَاwamāAnd whatلَـنَٓاlanāfor usاَلَّاallāthat notنُقَاتِلَnuqātilawe fightف۪يfīinسَب۪يلِsabīli(the) wayاللّٰهِl-lahi(of) Allahوَقَدْwaqadwhile surelyاُخْرِجْنَاukh'rij'nāwe have been drivenمِنْminfromدِيَارِنَاdiyārināour homesوَاَبْنَٓائِنَاۜwa-abnāināand our childrenفَلَمَّاfalammāYet, whenكُتِبَkutibawas prescribedعَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimuupon themالْقِتَالُl-qitāluthe fightingتَوَلَّوْاtawallawthey turned awayاِلَّاillāexceptقَل۪يلاًqalīlana fewمِنْهُمْۜmin'humamong themوَاللّٰهُwal-lahuAnd Allahعَل۪يمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knowingبِالظَّالِم۪ينَbil-ẓālimīnaof the wrongdoers
