Surah 2 · Verse 249

فَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenفَصَلَfaṣalaset outطَالُوتُṭālūtuTalutبِالْجُنُودِۙbil-junūdiwith the forcesقَالَqālahe saidاِنَّinnaIndeedاللّٰهَl-lahaAllahمُبْتَل۪يكُمْmub'talīkumwill test youبِنَهَرٍۚbinaharinwith a riverفَمَنْfamanSo whoeverشَرِبَsharibadrinksمِنْهُmin'hufrom itفَلَيْسَfalaysathen he is notمِنّ۪يۚminnīfrom meوَمَنْwamanand whoeverلَمْlam(does) notيَطْعَمْهُyaṭʿamhutaste itفَاِنَّهُfa-innahuthen indeed, heمِنّ۪ٓيminnī(is) from meاِلَّاillāexceptمَنِmaniwhoeverاغْتَرَفَigh'tarafatakesغُرْفَةًghur'fatan(in the) hollowبِيَدِه۪ۚbiyadihi(of) his handفَشَرِبُواfasharibūThen they drankمِنْهُmin'hufrom itاِلَّاillāexceptقَل۪يلاًqalīlana fewمِنْهُمْۜmin'humof themفَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenجَاوَزَهُjāwazahuhe crossed itهُوَhuwaheوَالَّذ۪ينَwa-alladhīnaand those whoاٰمَنُواāmanūbelievedمَعَهُۙmaʿahuwith himقَالُواqālūthey saidلَاlāNoطَاقَةَṭāqatastrengthلَنَاlanāfor usالْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayبِجَالُوتَbijālūtaagainst Jalutوَجُنُودِه۪ۜwajunūdihiand his troopsقَالَqālaSaidالَّذ۪ينَalladhīnathose whoيَظُنُّونَyaẓunnūnawere certainاَنَّهُمْannahumthat theyمُلَاقُواmulāqū(would) meetاللّٰهِۙl-lahiAllahكَمْkamHow manyمِنْminofفِئَةٍfi-atina companyقَل۪يلَةٍqalīlatinsmallغَلَبَتْghalabatovercameفِئَةًfi-atana companyكَث۪يرَةًkathīratanlargeبِاِذْنِbi-idh'niby (the) permissionاللّٰهِۜl-lahi(of) Allahوَاللّٰهُwal-lahuAnd Allahمَعَmaʿa(is) withالصَّابِر۪ينَl-ṣābirīnathe patient ones
