When Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, "Miserable is what you have done after me; do you wish to hasten the action of your Lord?" He cast down the tablets, and took his brother by his head dragging him towards him. He said, "Son of my mother, the people overpowered me and nearly killed me, so do not make the enemies rejoice over me, and do not make me with the wicked people."

[7:150] The tablets containing God's commandments were not sacred or important but the commandments themselves were. Thus, as a reaction to the Children of Israel's disobedience to the first commandment, Moses reacted in anger. His throwing away the physical medium carrying the commandments and interrogating his brother for letting his people regress into idolatry has a message. There are those who ignore many commandments of the Quran, including its first commandment, yet demonstrate extreme respect to the paper and ink comprising the manuscript of the Quran. This behavior is materialistic and totemic.
