وَاِذْwa-idhAnd whenيَعِدُكُمُyaʿidukumupromised youاللّٰهُl-lahuAllahاِحْدَىiḥ'dāoneالطَّٓائِفَتَيْنِl-ṭāifatayni(of) the two groupsاَنَّهَاannahāthat it (would be)لَكُمْlakumfor youوَتَوَدُّونَwatawaddūnaand you wishedاَنَّannathatغَيْرَghayra(one) other thanذَاتِdhātithatالشَّوْكَةِl-shawkati(of) the armedتَكُونُtakūnuwould beلَكُمْlakumfor youوَيُر۪يدُwayurīduBut intendedاللّٰهُl-lahuAllahاَنْantoيُحِقَّyuḥiqqajustifyالْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truthبِكَلِمَاتِه۪bikalimātihiby His wordsوَيَقْطَعَwayaqṭaʿaand cut offدَابِرَdābira(the) rootsالْكَافِر۪ينَۙl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelieversGod promises you that one of the two parties will be defeated by you; yet you wish that the one least armed be the one. But God wishes that the truth be manifest with His words, and that He eliminates the remnant of the ingrates.
