وَاِذَٓاwa-idhāAnd whenاُنْزِلَتْunzilatwas revealedسُورَةٌsūratuna Surahاَنْanthatاٰمِنُواāminūbelieveبِاللّٰهِbil-lahiin Allahوَجَاهِدُواwajāhidūand striveمَعَmaʿawithرَسُولِهِrasūlihiHis Messengerاسْتَأْذَنَكَis'tadhanakaask your permissionاُو۬لُواulū(the) menالطَّوْلِl-ṭawli(of) wealthمِنْهُمْmin'humamong themوَقَالُواwaqālūand saidذَرْنَاdharnāLeave usنَكُنْnakun(to) beمَعَmaʿawithالْقَاعِد۪ينَl-qāʿidīnathose who sitIf a chapter is sent down: "That you shall acknowledge God and strive with His messenger," those with wealth and influence ask your permission and they say, "Let us be with those who remain behind."
